Warning: Bitch Alert

So, I apologize now for how cynical this may sound, but why do we only care about deaths in developing world countries when there is a major disaster? I mean, there has been a great deal of death due to poverty, homelessness, lack of clean water, food and infrastructure in places like Thailand, Sri Lanka and India for some time now. Suddenly, everyone has money to donate to make the world better. Maybe, if anyone had given a fuck sooner, some of these countries wouldn’t be facing the infrastructure problems which are delaying aid when it is available. Not that I think there is anything qrong with the outpoorings, it just seems trendy.

Even on the news?

Do you have any idea how many news stations in this province led with Canada playing Russia for the World Junior cup?  Is that really all that is happening in this province?  Oh wait, there was a fire in a homeless shelter and its fucking cold outside - burried.  Fire at the Suncor plant up north - if it was covered it didn't see a full minute of airtime.  Who cares about anyone's safety or potential ecological damage.

Oh, and before you ask, we won.

should be snoring

It is ridiculously late and I simply can’t sleep. Does that mean I am getting an early start on all the stuff I need to accomplish before school starts next week? hell no!

There was a book I read as a teen where part of a generation was genetically altered to not need sleep. They wind up being super intelligent and useful, spending that extra time doing all kinds of stuff that we regular sleepers never quite have the time for. As I am frequently unable to sleep, I wonder what my life would be like if I ever got around to doing stuff at 4 in the morning when I can’t sleep.

Oh, wait, I have a question for all you from the UK - what does "ramraid" mean? I was watching the documentary about the BBC journalist who went undercover into the Manchester police to examine racism, and it was the only slang I couldn’t figure out.... I mean, I gather it is “up to no good” but would like to narrow it down...

Lois Hole has died. Very sad.

I’ve been paying attention to the coverage of Lois Hole’s death.  Part is because she was a very nice woman – at one point her greenhouse advertised on a billboard near my home and instead of the traditional poster, it was covered in live plants.  I can’t express how wonderful it was – so beautiful in the downtown to see all these plants and flowers and LIFE.  I called the greenhouse to thank them for it, and she returned the call saying she was happy I had said something; they had felt they were taking a risk with it and was pleased I liked it.  She said if I ever made it out to her greenhouse I should introduce myself.  I never did – I don’t get out to St Albert very often.

The other thing I like about the coverage is that it is just so positive.  Things like “she made me want to be a better person” even just listening to the coverage, I wish I were a better person.  How do people, some people, do so much good, live such happy lives?  Is it a choice?  Or are they born like that?  I don’t think I know anyone who is extremely positive and outgoing, so it was nice to see much about her, even if it is over her death.

RA

So, I was granted a Research Assistance for this term - and no, this doesn’t mean I have someone to aid in my papers... I get to do boring research for someone who won’t be looking at it for a few months. And you’ll want to sit down before I tell you what it is - you’re about to be SO jealous...

I need to find and then photocopy reviews of Gray Owl’s books.

Gray Owl, for you who don’t know, was a Brit who masqueraded as a member of the First Nations and wasn’t unmasked until after his death, although the Indians of his “tribe” knew. He was a strong environmentalist although the prof is more interested in issues of identity and perception.

Sorry for not sounding a bit more grateful about this. I am actually quite happy - I did work quite similar to this when I worked for Chase, only for much less money and with a smelly boss. The prof is REALLY nice and says I can be very flexible with my hours.

Next time, I will tell you all about my classes for this term...

So, today I have a bunch of fiddlely things that need to get done.
- apply for bursaries
- photocopy stuff for my writing class
- organize my day timer for the coming term and figure out when I’m doing everything.
hrm. I thought there was more than this....

I read the Maltese Falcon last night. I have to admit, a book you can read in one day is a good one. It was fun to just sit down and read for the joy of it. And gosh it was fun. So gritty and rough with such delightful stereotypes. And the kissing - so much of it comes wrapped in the phrase “he kissed her roughly” of course, occasionally its a soft kiss. But there is so much anger towards the femme fatal.

This will be a good term.
